International Dot Day is a chance to highlight students’ uniqueness, both themselves and their expression; highlight their personal power and how retaining self-control over their words and actions helps them to keep their personal power and provide them with more choices.
First: Have the story read on youtube,
Second: Discuss the story and talk about how Vashti gained choices and personal power by not only doing what she was asked to do, but then choosing to expand it. We discuss how unique her expression was when in the beginning she thought she cou’dn’t draw.
Third: Put markers, colored pencils, and variously colored construction paper on each table. Students choose a piece of construction paper.
Fourth: Let the students know I’m going to give them special dots that they can glue onto the paper.
Fifth: Pass out small googly eye dots. I cut up straws for the older kids to use if they wish. They have a ball with this ‘different’ kind of dot creating their own art. (Credit: Allison Payne)
