What is Student Council?

  • Provides a way to communicate amongst peers while representing view points to staff and administration
  • Helps to promote school pride and spirit
  • Opportunity to unite fellow peers, while showing and growing leadership skills through involvement in student council activities and events
  • Acts as a avenue to resolve problems in the school
  • Works with community members to help those in need while growing networking abilities-an important life skill for success
  • Student Voice-create own clubs (what does S.C. see as a need that Landry should incorporate)
  • Expression of values, opinions, beliefs and perspectives (Student Voice); the 3 levels are student engagement, student voice, and transformative student voice

Who Can Run for Student Council?

  • Fourth and Fifth graders, who:
    • Show positive leadership in the school
    • Show integrity 
    • Must at all times uphold the 3 R’s: Ready, Respectful and Responsible
    • Come to school everyday
    • Is making at least a “C” in all subject areas
    • Passes the teacher screening

Typical Titles of Election Officers

President – represents the entire student body at school, pride events, meetings, be active in school activities, conduct all General Assembly Meetings, and work with administration, also will act as an ex-officio of all committee meetings

Vice President– assumes the duties of the president in his/her absence, work directly with the president, work directly with the president in all matters and facilitate regular scheduled meetings

Sergeant at Arms–Open all meetings, coordinate philanthropic projects (for example, leading a Thanksgiving Food Drive and a Christmas Toy Drive), facilitate the coverage of spirit announcements and tabulation of participation, start and lead an eco-friendly initiative, (Earth Day Club) and chair the School Service Committee

Secretary – Be responsible for taking thorough notes, dating and noting the topic of discussion, important bullet points, etc. then reading notes prior to the start of each scheduled meeting. Be responsible in ensuring notes are in a safe space and to keep notes confidential from any persons outside of student council.

Treasurer – Coordinate all fundraising projects, count and report all funds, work with the advisor to maintain a positive balance in the student council account
